Prioritizing and Setting Goals This Year: Moving from Reactive to Intentional

As a new year begins, I’ve been spending time in prayer and reflection, asking God to
help me focus less on simply doing more and more on doing what He is calling me to
do. Prioritizing and setting goals sounds straightforward, but in reality it can feel
overwhelming—especially when life constantly pulls us in many directions. Lately, I’ve
realized that I’ve been more reactive than proactive, responding to immediate demands
instead of intentionally seeking God’s direction for my time and energy.

When Everything Feels Urgent

One of my biggest struggles is identifying which tasks truly need to be done and then
prioritizing them according to what matters most. When everything feels urgent, it’s easy
to live in reaction mode—answering requests, solving problems, and putting out
fires—without pausing to ask, Lord, is this what You want me to focus on right now?

I’ve also struggled with saying no. I want to serve others well, and that desire often
comes from a good place. But I’m learning that saying yes to everything can mean
saying no to the quiet space God uses to speak, guide, and restore. Reflection, prayer,
and rest don’t always feel urgent, yet Scripture reminds us that they are essential.

“Be still, and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10)

Structure at Work, Surrender at Home

In my work life, structure comes naturally. I follow rules and procedures well—so well
that I’ve written many of them over the years. When it comes to work, tasks get done,
deadlines are met, and expectations are clear.

In my personal life, however, that same level of intentional structure hasn’t always been
present. I haven’t been consistent in setting aside time for prayerful reflection and
personal goal-setting. Without that intentional space with God, my personal priorities
often take a back seat to the immediate needs of others or the busyness of the day.

Learning to Be Proactive Through Faith

In this season of my life, I sense God inviting me to slow down and live more
intentionally. Moving from being reactive to being proactive starts with
surrender—placing my plans before Him and trusting His guidance.

“Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.” (Proverbs 16:3)

Being proactive doesn’t mean having everything figured out. It means:

  • Seeking God first before filling my schedule
  • Allowing Him to define what is truly important
  • Understanding that not every opportunity requires a yes
  • Creating margin for prayer, reflection, and rest
  • Redefining Productivity Through a Biblical Lens

I’m learning that productivity isn’t just about accomplishment—it’s about obedience. It’s
about stewarding the time, energy, and gifts God has given me in a way that honors
Him. Balance isn’t achieved by doing everything well, but by aligning my priorities with
God’s will.

This year, my goal isn’t perfection, but faithfulness. Not busyness, but balance. I want to
feel productive not only in my work, but in my walk with Christ, my relationships, and my
personal growth.

As I step into this year, I’m reminding myself that priorities don’t happen by
accident—they’re shaped through prayerful choices. With God’s guidance, I’m choosing
to live with clarity, purpose, and trust, believing that when I seek Him first, everything
else will fall into its rightful place.

“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be
added to you.” (Matthew 6:33)
